“Let me claim my masculinity before I say…”
“No Homo, dude.”
“I’m not gay, but…”
Sound familiar? I heard the first just this morning. At work, incredibly enough. What is the need for this effervescent disclaimer? It’s fluff, unnecessary, and unwanted. Do people still feel that using their masculinity as an excuse is a justifiable pardon? Because I’m a manly-man I can say that guy looked handsome without anyone thinking I’m losing touch of my manliness.
Men have a quota. If they fail to prove their husky worth, they’re publicly scrutinized and lose a corner. Mind you, losing a corner is the most insulting thing a man could ever experience. The correlation is undeniable between early exposure to these expectations and beliefs later in life about masculinity.
